Rumours are circulating that petrol prices in Iran may jump from 3,000 to 87,200 tomans per litre, roughly 29 times the current price. If implemented, this could trigger severe public backlash and renewed unrest. In 2019, a threefold increase sparked major protests.
Petrol is heavily subsidized in Iran and currently sold well below global market prices.
