UAE Should Trigger Nuclear Deal Clause if Saudi Arabia Gets Better Terms

Analysis: The UAE’s 2009 123 Agreement included a clause allowing it to reopen terms if Washington offers a better deal to another Middle Eastern state, which should now be triggered if Saudi Arabia secures a softer nuclear pact.

In response, Shin (@hey_itsmyturn) pointed out that the UAE signed the US “gold standard” 123 Agreement in 2009 and voluntarily gave up enrichment. But it had the foresight to protect itself: if Washington later offered another Middle Eastern state better terms, the UAE could ask to reopen its own deal. If Riyadh is now getting a softer agreement, that clause should be triggered. The UAE accepted the rules Washington said were essential and shouldn’t be permanently penalized because Saudi Arabia refused those same rules and waited for a better offer.
